It was with great sadness that I read of Charlie Meyers' passing in this morning's Denver Post. While the news was not unexpected-Charlie had been battling cancer - it's a sad day for all of us who enjoy Colorado's out-of-doors.
Charlie Meyers was without question a champion for the interests of Colorado's hunters and anglers, using his megaphone as an outdoor writer to address the great issues of sportspeople and conservation. From whirling disease to instream flows to hunting license allocation, there were few of the major issues where he did not play an important role in framing the debate. His efforts throughout his career earned him every major Trout Unlimited Award there is - Colorado TU's Communications Award, National TU's Trout Conservation Award, and the Silver Trout Award in recognition of lifetime contributions to Colorado's coldwater fisheries.
Yet for all his contributions to conservation, that is not what I will miss most about Charlie. On the days his columns ran in the Denver Post, I could open the paper and know that I was in for a great outdoor experience - right from the breakfast table. So could the thousands of other readers who turned to his column every week.
Charlie, I'll miss those journeys every week.
